I don't usually do textures...it's not that I don't like them, its just that when I fall in love with an image, I usually can't imagine changing it (much). But sometimes, a great texture is just what the doctor ordered...
...especially if what the doctor ordered is a rich, aged black and white. :)
Adding a texture is actually really simple. You just add it as a new layer to your photoshop image, size it to cover the whole image, and then change your blending mode (I usually go with "multiply" but it is fun to try a bunch of blending modes on for size first. They all look different.) then adjust your opacity as desired. Make sure to stay away from having a texture on your subjects face..people don't want to look like their skin is scratched up leather or cracked stone! (Use your layer masks for easy face texture removal).
You can find my new favorite texture site here:
These are free!
There are a lot of great textures out there, but be careful about using copyrighted work. Most authors will note the creative commons license. Always pay attention to the texture author's copyright preferences!
